BLDE (Deemed to be University) School of Law, Vijayapura, organised a programme to commemorate the International Day of Democracy on 15th September 2026 for the students of the B.A. LL.B ( Batch of 2026-27) programmes. The International Day of Democracy is observed every year on 15 September to promote and uphold the principles of democracy worldwide. The programme was organised with the objective of creating awareness among law students about the value of democratic governance and their role as responsible citizens and future legal professionals in upholding constitutional values.
The programme commenced with a brief welcome address by Ms. Agnes Augustine, Assistant Professor, School of Law, Vijayapura. The session was delivered by Mr. Mallesh Torvi, guest faculty of Political Science. The session was on the importance and values of democracy. He began by explaining the meaning and definition of democracy, describing it as a system of government of the people, by the people, and for the people. He then traced the historical evolution of democracy, from its origins in Ancient Greece to its development in modern nations, including India. He further spoke about the essential features of democracy, such as free and fair elections, the rule of law, the protection of fundamental rights, and the separation of powers, and also touched upon the present-day challenges faced by democratic societies, including political corruption, misinformation, and declining civic participation. The session highlighted the significance of democratic principles, participation, history, development features, and the present challenges in a democratic society.
The session was well received by the students, who actively participated and gained valuable insights into how democracy works and its importance in everyday life. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Agnes Augustine, Assistant Professor, School of Law, Vijayapura.expressing gratitude to the Dean & Principal, faculty members, and students for their support and participation in making the programme successful.
